Deck the Halls…and the Walls and the Doors

I think we are finally finished decorating our home for Christmas. Maybe. It depends on what I find this weekend while shopping at Hobby Lobby and At Home. 😉

This is my favorite time of year. Because it’s my favorite time of year it will fly by faster than a freight train, and that kinda makes me sad. Just when I start to really enjoy it, it’s gone. So, I’ll try to make it last as long as I can. We celebrated with family on Thanksgiving so Christmas Eve and Day will be quiet. It’s alright, though. I am content. I will enjoy the lights and the treats and the movies and the music while it’s here.

It seems as if with each passing Christmas season, I think more and more about Christmases past. Oh my, the smell of turkey and ham and bakery goods that came from the kitchen at my grandmother’s house, all was enough to get my mouth watering, even today. We are a big family, or were. And we were loud! Under the well-decorated tree were presents for miles. But for me, it was the feeling. We weren’t a perfect family, but we knew how to holiday. We ate and drank and sang Christmas songs and laughed. I miss those days.

Now, Christmas is so electronic. Everyone sits around with their eyes glued to their phone screens. Gone are the days of rounds of Uno. My, we would laugh!

The family has shrunk by a lot, but the two people that made it jolly and delicious are now gone. And we are scattered. We live in Tennessee while my sisters and Dad and Step-mom all live in Illinois.

No, Christmas will never be the same again, but we can still make new memories and traditions and pass those along to the next generation of us. Hopefully, we can pass along the beauty, sweetness and holiness of the season as well.

Do you have a favorite Christmas memory? Do share!

  1. I have too many favorite memories to mention. All lovely.

I also miss the smells, sounds and flavors of Christmases past. And Mom and Aunt Ro and how they made Christmas sparkle.

We have a new generation now. We are the Moms and Aunt Ros for them. It’s up to us, together or apart, to make those memories for them. And I personally, loved when we used to get together virtually to play games or talk. That was fun!!!
